After a week in Amsterdam filled with sightseeing, Dutch delicacies, and plenty of canals, it was time to head back to the United States. While leaving behind the charm of Amsterdam was tough, there was one thing I was genuinely excited about for my return journey: using Global Entry for the very first time! I applied earlier in the year, got approved but had yet to reap its benefits. Being a credit card churner, I was looking to make the most value of my AMEX Platinum perk as well.
When I initially applied for Global Entry, I was drawn to the promise of a smoother, quicker re-entry into the U.S. But as a first-time user, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Would it really be as easy as people said? Here’s how my experience played out.
Arriving in the U.S.: The First Global Entry Kiosk
Landing back in the U.S., I followed the signs for “Global Entry” and was directed to a kiosk specifically for Global Entry users. I was prepared with my passport and a bit of excitement. The kiosk was modern and easy to use: I simply scanned my passport, looked at the camera for a quick facial recognition scan, and placed my fingerprints on the scanner.
Within seconds, I received a printed slip confirming my entry. There was no fumbling with forms, no in-person questions, and (most importantly) no wait.
That was literally it!
No Lines, No Waiting
The stark contrast between Global Entry and the regular customs line was striking. As I passed the usual line, I noticed people waiting, looking at their watches and exchanging weary glances. Instead of the traditional “inspection” process, I was able to breeze right by, thanks to the slip from the kiosk.
Customs Clearance: As Smooth As Promised
With my slip in hand, I headed toward the customs agent. The officer quickly checked my printed slip and passport, then waved me through with a friendly “Welcome back.” I couldn’t believe it—I was officially through U.S. customs, and in record time.
Final Thoughts: The Value of Global Entry
Using Global Entry for the first time was eye-opening. The process was fast, intuitive, and made what’s usually the most stressful part of international travel incredibly simple. I went from landing to reuniting with my family in a matter of minutes. It was worth every penny of the application fee and saved me valuable time that I was able to spend getting back into the swing of things.
If you’re a frequent traveler or even take an international trip once a year, I can’t recommend Global Entry enough. It turns the often-dreaded re-entry process into a seamless experience and gives you more time to focus on what matters most—whether that’s catching your next flight or enjoying a smooth return home.
